SURGICAL COACHING PROJECT
How to Engage with This Project
The NPC-QIC Surgical Coaching project continues to accept applications. We invite NPC-QIC congenital heart surgeons who are at programs where the Norwood Procedure is performed and those who are either board eligible or board certified in the subspecialty of congenital heart surgery to apply for participation and learn more via SharePoint here.
Please contact NPC-QIC staff at info@npcqic.org with any questions or if you need additional assistance.
Primary Objective: To determine the feasibility of formalized visiting surgical mentorship.
Secondary Objectives:
• Identify patterns of surgical variation and formal technical skills acquired via surgical coaching visits
• Monitor potential changes made by visiting surgeons within their own practice
• Identify changes in surgical outcomes for surgeons and programs following a surgical visit
Leaders:
• Principal Investigator: S. Adil Husain
Visiting Surgeon Quotes:
• "I have enjoyed both visits thus far. Good to see the tremendous variation and each time I see something that I like. Also good to just pick others brains about heart surgery... It's been great overall... I would hope to share my experience as well and promote this type of collaboration and learning."
• "It was quite informative to visit a center with such a high volume of Norwood procedures. I was able to glean useful information regarding: preoperative management (decision regarding Norwood vs. Stage I hybrid, timing of Norwood), intraoperative technique (perfusion and circulatory arrest strategy, nuances regarding Sano shunt and pulmonary arteries), and postoperative management (chest closure, ICU management strategy, cardiac arrest prevention bundle)."
